Most people are capable of more than they realise.

Most confrontations are decided before a punch is thrown. What you noticed, how you carried yourself, the decision you made thirty seconds earlier. The physical skills matter, but they are the last layer of a much larger picture.

That is the foundation of how self defence is taught at Spear Dojo. Awareness first. Mindset second. Physical response when everything else has failed.

What self defence training at Spear Dojo covers

Understanding what happens to your body the moment a situation turns serious is where training begins. From there, training builds through three layers. Reading environments and recognising situations before they develop. Managing and de-escalating when something does arise. And when everything else has failed, a practical physical response.

Self defence runs through everything taught at Spear Dojo. Students who train regularly in Zen Do Kai are building this capability week by week, in a structured curriculum that covers awareness, striking, grappling, ground escapes, and weapons defence across years of progressive training.

For those who want a focused session, we run tailored workshops.

Women’s self defence workshops

Sessions cover the full picture, situational awareness, reading body language, de-escalation, and practical physical techniques designed around how attacks on women commonly occur. The goal is not just a set of techniques but a shift in how participants move through the world.

Workplace and group workshops

Healthcare workers, school staff, corporate teams, universities, dance schools, and community organisations have all trained with us. Each workshop is tailored to the specific situations and risks your group faces, including the psychological and physiological realities of threat response.

Beyond the workshop

A workshop gives you real, applicable skills and a genuine shift in awareness. Regular training is where those skills stop being things you think about and start being things you just do. Awareness becomes automatic. Composure under pressure becomes a habit rather than an effort. For many people who start with a workshop, that is where the next chapter begins.
