Some people are here to compete,

others just need somewhere to reset.

Every person who walks through our door comes with a different reason. Some are looking to get fit. Some want to learn real self defence. Some are chasing competition. Some just want something that challenges them in a way nothing else has. Whatever brought you here, you are in the right place.

The right place, whatever your level

Whether you have never trained before or you have spent years on the mats, you will find what you are looking for at Spear Dojo.

Beginners find structure, patience, and a community that remembers what it felt like to start from nothing. Experienced martial artists find depth, technical precision, and people who have competed, coached, and trained at the highest levels nationally and internationally. Every session is structured so you are always working at the right level and always moving forward.

Spear Dojo has been running adult martial arts classes in Perth’s northern suburbs since 1987. Our Wangara facility is equipped with a full-size ring, matted grappling area, and heavy bag stations, with sessions running Monday to Saturday.

Who you will train with

The instructors at Spear Dojo grew up here, earned their place on the mats, and chose to stay.

Their backgrounds span Sports Science, Education, firefighting, close quarter combat, security, and elite competition. They hold Combat Sports Commission registration and long service within Bob Jones Martial Arts, the founding organisation of Zen Do Kai in Australia. They have trained in Thailand, Japan, Serbia, and beyond. They have refereed and judged at state, national, and international level. Between them they have trained with world champions, masters, and leading practitioners across multiple disciplines and continents.

Every instructor focuses on individual student development. In a class of beginners and experienced practitioners, that means paying attention to where each person is, not just where the class is going. Personalised feedback, adjusted technique, and genuine investment in your progress are part of every session.

Walk onto the mats on any given night and you will train alongside people who have been here for ten, fifteen, twenty years. Competitors. Former fighters. People who started as white belts and never left. Experienced members help newcomers find their feet. That is just how it works here.

    What our members say

“The coaches are at an extremely high level and are great at tailoring their teaching style to the class as a whole and the individual. The dojo is respectful and places an emphasis on the bushido code, all while still curating a friendly agro-free learning environment. I travel an hour and a half round trip instead of training anywhere closer. It is absolutely worth driving the extra distance.” — Hedley

“I joined as a teenager but then moved south and struggled to find another club with the same work ethic. I moved back north six years ago and signed back up in my thirties and my fitness has never been better. This is not one of those clubs where they give out a new belt every few months, you have to earn your rank through commitment and hard work.” — Tim

“I have trained both Zen Do Kai and Muay Thai for almost eight years and recently changed to Spear Dojo and I absolutely love training there. My technique has improved tremendously thanks to the finer attention to detail from the instructors and I have made quite a few friends while training.” — Taleena

“I have been training here for most of my life and I do not plan on leaving anytime soon. Absolutely wonderful staff, friendly training partners and a very supportive environment.” — Jake

    Our adult martial arts disciplines

Zen Do Kai — freestyle Karate

The foundation of Spear Dojo and the heart of everything we teach. Zen Do Kai translates as “The Best of Everything in Progression”, a freestyle Karate system built on one principle: if it works, use it.

Developed within Bob Jones Martial Arts, Zen Do Kai draws from Karate, Muay Thai, Boxing, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Judo, Aikido, Krav Maga, Systema, Eskrima, Wrestling, and MMA, combining the most effective techniques from across the martial arts world into one practical system. Classes cover kata, sparring, and self defence scenarios, with a grading pathway that tracks your development from white belt through to black belt and beyond.

The self defence taught in Zen Do Kai is streetwise and grounded in reality. Krav Maga principles, built on instinctive responses to real threats, are woven through the curriculum alongside MMA concepts that prepare students for every range of combat.

The instructors behind Zen Do Kai at Spear Dojo hold black belts up to 10th Degree, Bachelor degrees in Sports Science and Education, elite strength and conditioning accreditation, Krav Maga certification, and close quarter combat and security credentials. Between them they have trained with world champions, masters, and leading practitioners across multiple disciplines and continents.

A belt at Spear Dojo means something. It always has.

    Muay Thai

The art of eight limbs. Rooted in Thai culture and tradition, Muay Thai is one of the world’s most complete and demanding striking arts, developing powerful technique using fists, elbows, knees, and kicks alongside cardiovascular conditioning that keeps you coming back.

The instructors behind our Muay Thai program hold qualifications up to 8th Degree BJMA Muay Thai, Bachelor degrees in Sports Science, Combat Sports Commission registration, and accreditation as Muay Thai judges and competition coordinators. Several have developed fighters at state and national level and bring decades of competing and coaching to every session.

Sessions cover pad work, bag rounds, partner drilling, and conditioning. Whether you are training for your first amateur bout or want a workout that challenges you every single time, the program meets you where you are.

    Brazilian Jiu Jitsu

BJJ is a grappling based martial art built on leverage, positioning, and control. It gives you the ability to manage and submit opponents regardless of size, making it one of the most practical self defence systems available and one of the most mentally engaging sports you will find.

Our BJJ program is supported by instructors holding Professor rank and Black Belt credentials, with a connection running directly to a seven-time world champion. With over sixteen years of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu experience and competition appearances across fifty-plus tournaments, the knowledge behind our BJJ program is extensive and competition tested.

Classes cover sweeps, submissions, positional control, and escapes. Experienced grapplers help newcomers learn safely, and every class is structured so beginners can follow along while advanced students continue to develop.

    Boxing

Footwork, head movement, combinations, and defence. Our boxing program focuses on the fundamentals that make fighters effective and athletes fitter.

The instructors behind our boxing classes bring cross-disciplinary understanding across kickboxing, Muay Thai, and MMA alongside their boxing credentials, giving students a striking education that goes well beyond the basics. Classes include structured warm ups, technique instruction, bag work, and controlled sparring.
