Zen Do Kai

Everything that works. Nothing that doesn’t.

There is nothing quite like a Zen Do Kai class. Not because of any single technique, but because of the range of them. Striking, grappling, throws, locks, weapons, and self defence, all in one system.

Zen Do Kai is a freestyle martial arts system founded by Bob Jones in 1970, built around practical, adaptable training that works for different sizes, strengths, and circumstances.

New students train beside people who have spent five, ten, twenty years or more on the mats. Some started here as children and now teach classes of their own.

Zen Do Kai has been taught at Spear Dojo in Perth’s northern suburbs since 1987. Today’s training is shaped by decades of experience, refinement, and work drawn from Karate, Muay Thai, Judo, Krav Maga, Arnis, Systema, and other disciplines from around the world.
There is always another level to grow into.

Why people choose Zen Do Kai

A complete martial arts system

From early on, students train in striking, grappling, throws, locks, weapons, and self defence as part of one system. One class might involve pad work and kicking drills, another clinch work, takedowns, or groundwork. Over time, students build the ability to stay calm under pressure and adapt as situations change.

Practical self defence

Training is built around pressure, awareness, and control under stress. Students learn to handle situations that do not follow rules, with realistic scenario work woven through every level of the curriculum.

Weapons training included

Bo, Nunchaku, and Arnis are part of the Zen Do Kai curriculum from early in training. For many students, weapons work changes the way they see timing, movement, and distance across everything else they do.

You earn every belt

Gradings happen when you are genuinely ready. Assessed by senior instructors who know your training personally, every rank reflects real time on the mats and real development.

A system that keeps evolving

Zen Do Kai has never been fixed to a single style or era. New training methods, new ideas, and decades of experience continue to shape what is taught at Spear Dojo today.

For every goal

Some people come for fitness. Some for self defence. Some to compete. Zen Do Kai works across all of them. The path you take within it is your own.

A community that stays

Many of our Zen Do Kai students have been training together for years. Some started as children and now teach. Over time, training partners become part of life both on and off the mats.
