Perth’s Home of Practical Martial Arts Since 1987

A dojo is more than a training place. It is a way of life, a space where a Sensei shares expertise with students in an atmosphere of humility, integrity and respect.

Spear Dojo was established in 1987 by Chief Instructor Sōke Wayne Spear, a 9th Degree Black Belt in Zen Do Kai (Hanshi) and one of Western Australia’s most experienced martial arts educators. What began as a single karate class has grown into Perth’s largest multi-discipline martial arts centre, now offering Zen Do Kai, Muay Thai, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, MMA, Boxing, personal training, self defence workshops and specialist programs for all ages.

Our mission has never changed: provide quality martial arts instruction while building the values, confidence and life skills that training on the mat carries into everyday life.

What Sets Us Apart

Expert Instruction

Our coaching team holds nationally recognised credentials across multiple disciplines. Head Instructor Sōke Wayne Spear brings over 35 years of teaching experience, supported by qualified black belt instructors in every art we offer. Students learn from practitioners who compete, grade and continue their own development.

Real Results

We measure progress through structured grading pathways, practical skill assessments and individual goal tracking. Our students regularly earn state and national recognition through the Bob Jones Martial Arts (BJMA) organisation, the largest martial arts body in Australasia.

Community First

We put our students first and lead by example. From five-year-olds earning their first belt to adults returning to fitness after years away, every member trains in a supportive, welcoming environment. Our belief is simple: train hard, keep fit, and continue to learn practical martial arts.

Our Wangara Training Centre

Our dojo is located at Unit 3, 12 Buckingham Drive, Wangara, about 10 minutes from Joondalup and Wanneroo, with easy access from Kingsley, Woodvale, Girrawheen and surrounding northern suburbs.

We cater to all levels of fitness, from complete beginners to competitive athletes. The facility is purpose-built for martial arts and includes:

  • Over 300 square metres of training floor space
  • Three dedicated training rooms
  • Full-size boxing ring
  • Weights and cross-training area
  • Safety flooring throughout
  • Dedicated changing rooms and amenities

Our methods go beyond teaching self defence. Training at Spear Dojo builds self-discipline, sharpens focus and boosts confidence, skills that carry well beyond the mat.
