From one class in Mirrabooka to one of Perth’s longest-running martial arts academies.
A lot can happen in thirty-nine years.
In 1987, Wayne Spear opened a small dojo in Mirrabooka.
The goal was simple.
Pass on what had been taught to him.
A lot has happened since then.
Thousands of students have stepped onto the mats.
Some became competitors.
Some became instructors.
Some came to train in the same place their parents did.
Over the years the dojo moved through Perth’s northern suburbs, until it found a home in Wangara.
Wayne stepped onto the mats in 1980 and has never really left. He continues to travel, train, and learn from martial artists around the world. The willingness to remain a student, no matter how much experience you have, is something you’ll find throughout Spear Dojo.
It’s shaped how classes are taught. How instructors keep developing their own skills. And how a beginner taking their first class is welcomed onto the mats.
For nearly forty years, the expectations have stayed remarkably simple.
Show up.
Train hard.
Help the people around you.
Keep learning.

What Sets Us Apart
Expert Instruction
Our coaching team holds nationally recognised credentials across multiple disciplines. Head Instructor Sōke Wayne Spear brings over 35 years of teaching experience, supported by qualified black belt instructors in every art we offer. Students learn from practitioners who compete, grade and continue their own development.
Real Results
We measure progress through structured grading pathways, practical skill assessments and individual goal tracking. Our students regularly earn state and national recognition through the Bob Jones Martial Arts (BJMA) organisation, the largest martial arts body in Australasia.
Community First
We put our students first and lead by example. From five-year-olds earning their first belt to adults returning to fitness after years away, every member trains in a supportive, welcoming environment. Our belief is simple: train hard, keep fit, and continue to learn practical martial arts.
