BJMA turns 55 – What it means for us at Spear Dojo

This year, Bob Jones Martial Arts (BJMA) marks 55 years of growth, change, and tradition. While this milestone is significant for the entire BJMA community, it holds a special meaning for us here at Spear Dojo. BJMA isn’t just a name we’re affiliated with; it’s the foundation of our martial arts journey.

BJMA turning 55 is a moment for reflection and gratitude, for the lessons we’ve learned, the people who’ve guided us, and the way BJMA has shaped our training and our lives. It’s more than just a name; it’s a shared experience.

When Wayne Spear founded Spear Dojo, he had a clear vision: to create a place where people could grow as individuals through martial arts. His own training, deeply influenced by Soke Bob Jones, Soke Rod Stroud, Soke Richard Norton and Soke Billy Manne laid the groundwork for the dojo we have today.

For us, BJMA represents more than just a set of techniques or fighting styles, it’s a pathway to personal growth. Whether through Muay Thai, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, or Zen Do Kai, we’ve learned to focus on respect, discipline, and continuous improvement. BJMA’s teachings go beyond martial arts; they are about becoming better people, both on and off the mats. It’s not just about learning a series of moves; it’s about cultivating a deeper understanding of ourselves and each other. Every class we attend, every belt we earn, and every moment we spend training is an opportunity to uphold those core values: humility, respect, and constant self-improvement.

We’re also incredibly grateful for the impact that Soke Richard had on both BJMA and our dojo. Richard’s wisdom, integrity, and contributions to the martial arts world played a pivotal role in shaping BJMA into what it is today. His legacy continues to inspire us, and the lessons he shared continue to influence the way we train.

Soke Rod has been an integral part of Spear Dojo since we opened our doors. As a mentor and instructor to Wayne, his experience and passion for teaching have helped us connect even more deeply with BJMA’s values. Rod’s dedication to all Martial arts, combined with his own vast experience, has left an indelible mark on Spear Dojo. His influence can be felt in every class we teach and in every student who steps onto the mats.

As BJMA turns 55, it’s an opportunity to pause and reflect on everything that’s been accomplished over the years. But it’s also about looking forward. Martial arts, like life, is constantly evolving, and so are we. Spear Dojo remains committed to growth, whether it’s by adopting new techniques, welcoming new members, or adjusting to the needs of modern martial artists. No matter how we evolve, the core values that Soke Bob Jones instilled in BJMA remain unchanged.

For each of us at Spear Dojo, BJMA turning 55 is a reminder of the deep, personal connection we have to the broader BJMA community. It’s not just about the techniques we learn or the belts we earn; it’s about the people, the relationships, and the shared experiences that shape our journey. BJMA has helped us grow, not just as martial artists, but as individuals.

So, here’s to BJMA’s 55th anniversary, to the lessons we’ve learned, the community we’ve built, and the growth we continue to experience together. And here’s to the future, where we’ll keep learning, keep training, and keep living the BJMA values in everything we do!
